Tom Ganley for U.S. Senate's First TV Spot

Ohio Republican U.S. Senate candidate Tom Ganley is up on the air with his first TV spot for the May 2010 primary.  I think that it is an absolute brilliant strategy.

It's a 60 second spot only running on cable.  Now predictably, the MSM is already poo pooing the spot saying that the buy is not large enough to impact voters statewide.  They quote an unnamed GOP source for these alleged words of wisdom.

What idiots.  A $60,000.00 statewide buy on Fox News in Ohio is absolutely, freaking huge.

First, political ad rates right now are nothing.  Second, and more importantly, Fox News is the most watched cable news network by far, especially among conservative GOP likely primary voters.  Third, there are no other political ads on the air right now, so absolutely no political ad clutter.

In 2002 I ran a similar insurgent campaign in the City of Columbus, Ohio that successfully repealed a $4 dollar per day car rental tax.   For $60,000.00 over a ten day period during the height of the 2002 election season we were able to run 9 spots a day on 32 Wide Open West cable networks and 9 spots per day on the top 22 cable networks on Time Warner and Insight Cable.

Mayor Mike Coleman's campaign, on the other hand, spent over $350,000.00 on broadcast television spots during the same time period.  We won 62% to 38%.

I would wager to say that the auto dealers that I worked with in 2002 and auto dealer Tom Ganley know just a little bit about advertising and consumer opinions and getting the most bang for their ad bucks.  This should be a fun race.

Watch the spot for yourself and let me know what you think.

Tom Ganley is a likable guy and hopefully he defies the establishment with a primary win against Portman. I love it when deep pockets are willing to spend the kind of money necessary to 'rock the boat.' Ganley's going to need all of the money he can get to knock off Portman. Good for him.
